CAMERA
My goal in photographing the landscape is to keep the use
of the camera as simple and direct as possible. I shoot with
a 4x5 or an 8x10 Arca Swiss camera and use either a moderate
wide angle or telephoto lens. This limited selection allows
me to focus on looking at the landscape and to work quickly
and intuitively as my subject can change minute to minute
with the movement of the tide, waves, and light on reflective
surfaces.
FILM, PROCESSING, AND SCANNINGI
photograph with Kodak T-max 400 and T-max 100 films manually
developed in a Jobo Expert drums with Kodak XTOL developer
diluted 1:1. The negatives are drum scanned to 8-bit and 16-bit
grayscale files at a resolution that will allow full-scale
output at approximately 360 dpi.
EDITING AND PRINTINGThe scanned
negatives are edited using Adobe Photoshop on an Apple computer
with a Wacom tablet and mouse. I work extensively with adjustment
layers and masks to control overall and local contrast, and
I dodge or burn highlights, mid-tones, and shadows all separately
as needed to further control the rhythm and movement of values
across the print. Several small work prints are made until
I am satisfied with how the image looks, then I output full
size prints and final tonal adjustments are made . Editing
digitally allows for a very fluid, painterly control over
print values.
THE PRINTS The photographs
are digitally printed with an Epson 7000 printer using the
Studio Print RIP software, Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 188 gsm paper,
and monochromatic, hextone, pigmented inks. The process creates
beautiful images with translucent highlights and richly detailed
shadows. The prints have a wonderful depth, sharpness, and
tactile quality that cannot be matched by tradional photographs.
The prints will not fade when framed with archival materials.
