To
this day, I am puzzled by my early choices as a photographer.
I carried my view camera into the beautiful, remote woods
of northern Michigan and pointed it away from the majestic
views of trees and sky to the streambed at my feet where small
rocks appeared to float in the bright skylight reflected on
the water. In that mysterious perhaps even random choice,
I discovered a subject matter that continues to captivate
my imagination twenty-five years later. Look beyond the obvious
of rocks, mud, and sediments depicted in my photographs, and
you may
see in the transparent layers, depth, and space
the beauty and mystery that draws me back to the water’s
edge.
My career has been varied but always directed by the desire
to create images. I have worked as a freelance photographer
for history and natural history museums, as a cameraperson
on network documentaries, and as a producer for not-for-profit
organizations. And since my first exposures of rocks and water
in northern Michigan, I have worked as an artist photographing
the natural landscape. The prints available on this site have
resulted from many hundreds of images taken throughout my
career.
